"Seven Sisters"
from the Foxgloves CD
Release Date: 11/13/07
Produced by Hillary Johnson
Bell Hollow's debut full-length, Foxgloves,
infuses modern musical currents with a painfully rich romance between
shadowy post-punk and shoegaze; the contemplative, bittersweet sensuality
of the songs entrances and ensnares with an oceanic pull.
Singer Nick Niles' lissome melodies slice through the turbid soundscape
of Christopher Bollman's forceful bass, Greg Fasolino's atmospheric
guitar lines, and Todd Karasik's emphatic drumming to create stirring,
memorable songs. The propulsive "Copper Crayon" is a prime
example of Bell Hollow's rare ability to fuse accessible hooks and
moodiness, "Our Water Burden" features a wistful, reverb-heavy
melody punctuated by percussive picking and stories of love at sea,
while "The Bottle Tree" is a drum and bass driven tale of
lust turned sour. The lush "Eyes Like Planets" spins a yarn
of storybook seduction amidst an expanded tapestry of acoustic guitars,
mandolin, and organ.
Foxgloves has its classic touchstones (The Cure, The Chameleons,
Cocteau Twins, The Smiths), but the sonic, thematic, and lyrical content
on the album showcases Bell Hollow's original artistry, positioning
them at the forefront of the new wave of dream pop.
